Suicide Prevention Task Force
The Snohomish County Children’s Wellness Coalition is calling on experts and passionate members of the community to join our task force on suicide prevention. The Suicide Prevention Task Force is a working group with the goal of reducing youth suicide, ideation, planning and attempts across Snohomish County. We do this by:
- Supporting and strengthening youth suicide prevention, intervention and postvention efforts across the region.
- Coordinating with the Department of Health, Forefront Suicide Prevention at the University of Washington, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Riverside Trauma Center, and other recognized suicide prevention organizations.
- Enhancing coordination and providing targeted supports to youth and family serving sectors to maximize prevention efforts outside of the school day.
- Identifying gaps to leverage resources and globally recognized best practices.
- Providing technical assistance and training to build capacity for promoting protective factors and reducing risk factors that influence suicide through:
- Trainings that develop adult comfort, competence and confidence in responding to distress; and,
- Forums that promote youth voice and perspectives of those with lived experience in the mental health system.
- Identifying critical policy gaps to engage with model-policy developers like the Washington State School Directors Association, Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State Health Care Authority and other agencies.
Meetings
The Suicide Prevention Task Force meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9am to 10:30am, with work group assignments carried out between meetings on each member’s own time.
Term
Suicide Prevention Task Force members are appointed by vote of the Snohomish County Children’s Wellness Coalition and serve a one year term retroactive to January 1st of the current year. Members may be reappointed without a cap on number of terms served.

The Coalition
The Snohomish County Children’s Wellness Coalition is a countywide collaborative effort to improve the health and wellness of young people throughout our region. The Coalition is supported by Snohomish County Human Services and many organizations and expert community partners.
We are driven, in part, by findings from the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study that found higher levels of traumatic experiences in the general population than previously imagined. Extensive research on the biology of stress now shows that healthy development can be derailed by excessive or prolonged activation of stress response systems in the body and brain, demonstrating clear impacts on learning, behavior, and relationships beginning in early childhood and lasting throughout the lifespan.
The Children’s Wellness Coalition is committed to engaging the community to ensure all children, youth and families in Snohomish County have the opportunity to build upon their innate resiliency. We do this by:
- Educating stakeholders on trauma, ACEs, resilience, brain science, inclusion, and reflective practices
- Providing awareness and access to trauma-informed practices and policies by developing a set of common tools, materials and resources
- Aligning systems to decrease stigma/bias and increase self-efficacy & resiliency through our C.A.R.E. initiative
- Using common data points to measure outcomes

Our Progress
In early summer 2015, Snohomish County Human Services created a children’s wellness initiative that became the Children’s Wellness Coalition. Initially, our top priority was to build a foundation for sharing, networking, and regional collaboration.
In the coming months the Coalition developed a summary of community strengths and gaps in the youth mental health system, keying in on several action items.
Our ranks grew as we worked together, identifying school, family and community outreach as our primary goal. We are driven to equip our partners with trauma-informed knowledge and tools!
By January, 2016 we were surveying local schools to identify trauma-informed and social/emotional needs, and began communicating our findings superintendents throughout the region.
In winter 2016, we refined our mission and vision and began visualizing what a trauma informed community could look like. By that Spring, the Coalition engaged in Trauma Training provided by International Trauma Institute at Tulalip Tribes Cultural Center and began reviewing community strengths, weaknesses and gaps, in order to develop action items for our next steps as a Coalition.
Since then, our focus has been on building a trauma-informed organization and school sites through our Compassion, Awareness, Resilience & Empowerment (C.A.R.E.) initiative.toolbox for schools to be trauma aware and includes partnering with families and community members.
To date, more than 30 community-based organizations and 33 school buildings are working to install trauma-informed practices and policies as part of our C.A.R.E. initiative.
We hope you’ll be next!
